New York has an extensive public transport network. The transit types in the city include: Commuter rail, Rapid transit, Buses, Ferry, Private automobile, Bicycle, Taxicab, and Pedestrian. There are over ten million commuters who avail of transport in the city. The operators of transport in the city are: Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Port Authority Trans-Hudson, Metro-North Commuter Railroad Company, Long Island Railroad, New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, New Jersey Transit, New York Waterway, and New York Water Taxi.

The predominant mode of transportation in New York is the rail. The government agencies as well as the private corporations are responsible for managing the public transport of the city. Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is the major agency that looks after the transportation in the city. New York is also serviced by the extensive commuter rail in the city. There are 20 rail lines in the city and more than 250 stations. Over 150 million commuters take the rail everyday. The three rail systems in the city are: Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, and New Jersey Transit. The Long Island Rail Road serves the long island while the Metro-North Railroad serves Connecticut and the Hudson valley. The New Jersey Transit operates on New Jersey. These three rail systems meet at the Grand Central Terminal and the Penn Station both of which are located at Manhattan.

Another of the important modes of transportation in the city is the New York City sub way. It is by far the largest transit system in the world. More than 5 million passengers use the sub way on the weekdays. The subway lines in the city run through all the boroughs except in the Staten Island. The metro card is used to pay the fare in the subway which can also be used to pay fares in the other rapid transit modes of transport.

One of the major forms of transportation in the region is the intercity train service. The service is provided by Amtrak. There are a total of 54 trains that carry passengers from New York to the other cities. Some of the cities to which there are frequent services are: Albany, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and New Haven, Toronto and Montreal.

Another of the major modes of transport in the city is the bus. There are more than 5800 buses that ply on around 200 local routes as well as 30 express routes. The Port Authority Bus Terminal is the busiest station in the country. Ferries are also an important way to commute in New York. There are ferries available 24 hours a day throughout the year. Some of the ferry companies that service the city are: NY Waterway, SeaStreak and New York Water Taxi. A ferry ride gives a wonderful view of the Manhattan sky line as well as the statute of liberty.

The city of New York has three major airports: John F. Kennedy International (also known as JFK), Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia. JFK and Newark have both regional as well as international flights. LaGuardia caters to mostly domestic destinations. There are more than 100 airlines from over 50 countries that have flights to John F Kennedy airport.

The transportation system of the city of New York is well developed and it is supported by the excellent infrastructure of the city.
